The Romance
This
green gem has always been highly
valued. Dedicated in ancient times
to the goddess Venus, the Emerald
has always been the gem of lovely
women. Emeralds were chosen by
Napoleon for the Empress Josephine.
The famous Emerald mines of Egypt
were owned by Cleopatra, and many
of its gems bear her portrait.
It is said that she was always
adorned in Emeralds and that this
was her most treasured jewelry.
Emeralds of fine quality are far
more rare and valuable than Diamonds,
Rubies, or Sapphires. For centuries,
only men of great wealth could
bestow so priceless a gift, the
symbol of eternal Spring. Emerald
is the birthstone for the month
of May and the anniversary gemstone
for the 20th and 35th year of marriage,
and symbolizes love and success.
